William John Gasnier |
William John Gasnier was born in 1891 in Paddington, New South Wales (Australia). He was the eldest son of Phillip Gasnier and Louisa Malzard. [1] The family later moved to Hurstville, New South Wales.
On 17th January 1916, aged 24 years but clearly upon hearing the news of the evacuation of the Gallipoli Peninsula, William enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force, his young nation's overseas expeditionary force for the (First World) War. Following basic training he was posted to the 107th Howitzer Battery, 7th Australian Field Artillery Brigade as a Gunner. He saw action on the Western Front, in Belgium and France, returning to Australia 4th June 1919. [2] He was awarded both the British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
William married Grace Mackay in 1922 in Hurstville. [3]
He passed away, aged 87 years, on 29th May 1978 in New South Wales [4] and his ashes are placed in Woronora Memorial Park, Sutherland. [5]
