Marriage:
In 1893, Joseph married Augustine Trahan in Vermilion Parish, LA. [5]
In December 1898, Joseph and his brother Adam were in jail when other prisoners escaped. Joseph was referred to as "Tite", the Cajun version of "junior."
1900 Census:
Joseph, age 25, was enumerated as a divorced farm laborer and employee of the head of the household. [11]
1910 Census:
In 1910, Joseph was enumerated in Ward 6, Vermilion Parish with his second wife Euranie and their children Manuel and Louise. Joseph was 34 years old and worked as a farmer. [6]
Marriage:
In 1912, Joseph filed for a marriage license with Edolie Istre, his niece's half-sister. Joseph was 36 and Edolie was 13. [7] The couple had three sons before divorcing.
WW1 Draft:
Joseph indicated on his draft card that he was a 43-year-old rice mill worker. He listed his brother Adam Gaspard of Cow Island as his closest relative. [12]
1920 Census:
Joseph has not been found on the 1920 Census. His son Lovelace, then age 7, was enumerated as the adopted son of the Broussard family.
1930 Census:
In 1930, Joseph was enumerated as a widowed lodger in Ward 6, Vermillion Parish, LA. [13]
1940 Census:
In 1940, Joseph was enumerated as a 64 year-old head of household. He lived alone. [14]
In 1941, Joseph's youngest son committed suicide by hanging himself in jail. [10]
Death:
In March 1947, Joseph was found deceased in his home in Kaplan after a tornado. However, the coroner determined that Joseph had died of a heart attack. Joseph was buried at Marceaux Cemetery in Kaplan. The death year engraved on his gravestone, 1950, is incorrect. [15][4][16]
