Biography

Bertha May Gaul[1][2] was born on 24 April 1883,[3][4] in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania,[1] to Benjamin F. Gaul and Martha M. Herr.[1][4]

In 1900, she was living with her parents and siblings at 221 South 5th Street, Darby, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. She was a laborer, at a mill, and had been out of work one month from June 1899 to May 1900. [3]

She married Edward Francis Morris on 19 July 1905, in Camden, New Jersey. Edward was a grocery clerk, and lived at 819 Lamberton Street, Trenton, Mercer County, New Jersey. Bertha was living at 221 South 5th Street, Darby, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. [1] They had at least these children (but in 1910, she had had three children, two of whom were alive):

Florence Morris (1903-)
Beatrice Morris (1907-1990)
Myrtle Morris (1912-1914)

In 1910, Bertha and her daughters were living with her parents and siblings at 414 Franklin Street, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was an operator, in skirts, and had been out of work 30 weeks in 1909. [5]

Edward and Bertha were divorced on 17 April 1916, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, for desertion. [6] [2]

She married Lewis Berghof. They applied for a license on 9 August 1919, in Berks County, Pennsylvania (but could have been married anywhere in Pennsylvania). [7]

In 1920, Lewis and Bertha were living at 7429 Buist Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with Lewis's son Frederick and Bertha's daughter Beatrice. Lewis was a meat cutter for a meat market. [8]

In 1930, Lewis and Bertha were living at 7445 [?] Buist Avenue, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, with Lewis's son William. Lewis was a meat cutter at a butcher shop, Bertha was a shade maker at a lamp shade factory, and william was a salesman at a seed store. [9]

On 25 August 1930, she had surgery, at Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia. On 1 September, she died, of multiple liver abscesses. She was living at 7445 Buist Avenue. On 5 September, she was buried, in Arlington Cemetery, Drexel Hill, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. [4] [10]
