Bill Gaulden calls this man Joseph and Josiah and has records that list his name as one or the other. Bill also has him connected as a son of John Mathew Gaulding.

From Bill Gaulden of Kansas: "JOSEPH (JOSIAH) GAULDING was born in 1763 in PRINCE EDWARD CO., VA. He married MARTHA 'PATTY' BARNETT on 24 Dec 1788 in PRINCE EDWARD CO., VA. She was born in 1767. She died in PRINCE EDWARD CO., VA. JOSEPH (JOSIAH) and MARTHA 'PATTY'."

The condition of this obligation is such W___ there is a marriage shortly intended to be solemnized between them as JOSEPH GAULDING and PATTY BARNETT (spinster) daughter of RICHARD BARNETT, decd. If there is a lawful cause to abstain said marriage, then void.

"Joseph received 100 acres from father's estate in P.E. Co. and then bought 100 acres in P.E. Co. from Brother John Jr. on 14 Feb. 1780. He had a substantial plantation. When married, Alexander Gaulding was surety. Four Gauldings served in Rev. War from Prince Edward Co. Joseph lived with Brother Jesse."[2]

Will written 27 Aug 1821, Prince Edward Co., VA. (Book, 5, p. 572):

"In the name of God Amen I JOSEPH GAULDING do make and ordain this to be my last will and testament.
"It is my will that my whole estate both real and personal be kept together for the benefit and support of my daughters ELIZABETH NASH, and FRANCES GAULDING, MARGARET Gaulding, and JANE Gaulding until my three single daughters, FRANCES, MARGARET and JANE marry and then equally divided between all my children including MARY NASH. It is my will that the portion of my estate which shall on a division come to the share of my daughter Elizabeth NASH be kept in the hands of my executors for the support of said daughter Elizabeth NASH and her children during the life of her husband PRESLEY NASH. After his death to paid over and delivered to said ELIZABETH it being to be distin[c]tly understood that that the said PRESLEY NASH shall have no right or control whatever in and over the part of my estate which shall fall to my said daughter ELIZABETH either before or after a division, but the proceeds of her part during the life of the said PRESLEY NASH shall be by my Executor applied to the comfort and support of my said daughter ELIZABETH and all her children.
"It is my will that in the event of the deaths of WILLIAM NASH the husband of my said daughter MARY NASH, my said daughter MARY shall have an equal right with her sisters to a home on my plantation and a support out of my estate until the same be divided.
"I hereby appoint JAMES D. WOOD and DRURY WASTSON Executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all wills by me heretofore made ___my hand and seal this 27th day of August one thousand eight hundred and twenty one. The words "by said Executors" erased before signed.

Signed sealed and acknowledged in presence of HENRY E. WASTKINS, JAMES MORTON, JOSIAH PARIS.
"At a court held for PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY the 19th day of November 1821 this last will and testament of JOSEPH GAULDING dec'd was presented in court and proved by the oaths of HENRY E. WASTKINS and JAMES MORTON two witnesses thereto: ordained that the same be recorded at a court held for said county June the 17th 1822.

JAMES D. WOOD and DRURY WASTSON relinquish their right to qualify as ___ to this will thereupon in the motion of FRANCES GAULDING administration with the will answered is granted her, and she with MARGARET C. GAULDING and WILLIAM D. NASH her securities entered into and acknowledged their bond for the purpose in the penalty of four thousand dollars, conditioned according to law, and took the oath required by law, certificate for obtaining letters of administration thereof with the will answered in due form is granted. Teste B. MOROHAM (?)" (On cover - "Execs refuse to qualify and adm. granted FR. GAULDING."

Proof of Joseph's children: a suit in PRINCE EDWARD CO., VA, 16 July, 1860, (Book 18, pp. 111 and 112)."Whereas in a suit instituted in the County Court of PRINCE EDWARD in which DENNIS R. FIELDER and JANE his wife are plaintiffs and WILLIAM NASH and MARU MASJ his wife and others are defendants, a decree was made appointing said Fielder a commissioner to ___ a tract of land lying wholly in the county of Prince Edward estimated to contain ninety acres, and bounded on the south by the lands of JAMES ARMSTEAD, on the west by the lands of McHENRY E. WASTKINS, and on the north and east by the land of JAMES T. GRAY, and being the same tract of land of which JOSIAH GAULDING was seized. And whereas at a sale made by said FIELDER of said land in obedience to said decree, the said JAMES T. GRAY T. Gray became the purchaser ___ at the price of one thousand and ten dollars. And whereas the said JAMES T. GRAY has paid the whole of the said purchase money, and the said County Court at its June term for the year 1860 made a decree, and said cause in which said decree among other things the said Court did adjacentudge and order the said DENNIS R. FIELDER and JANE, his wife, WILLIAM D. NASH and MARY, his wife, MICHAEL O.B. GAULDING and MARGARET, his wife, ELIZABETH NASH, HENRY DICKERSON, MARY I. DICKERSON, MARGARET DICKERSON and JOHN BAILEY and BETTIE, his wife, to convey by proper deed with special warranty the said tract of land to the said JAMES T. GRAY, and did a__ Petters(?) S, Smithson a commissioner to ___ said deed for and on behalf and in the name of the said DENNIS R. FIELDER and JANE his wife, WILLIAM D. NASH and MARY. his wife, MICHAEL O.B. GAULDING and MARGARET, his wife, ELIZABETH NASH, HENRY DICKERSON, MARY I. DICKERSON, MARGARET DICKERSON and JOHN BAILEY and BETTIE, his wife of the one part and JAMES T. GRAY of the second part, Witnesseth; that in consideration as aforesaid doth grant to with special warranty unto the said JAMES T. GRAY all that said tract or parcel of land ___ before described, being the same of which JOSIAH GAULDING was seized when he died, lying in Prince Edward and bounded as aforesaid by the lands of JAMES ARMSTEAD, McHENRY E. Wastkins and the said JAMES T. Gray, and estimated to contain ninety acres more or less. Witness the following signature and seal. P.S. SMITHSON (Conv.?) ::Prince Edward County Court Clerks office, 16th July, 1860. This deed was acknowledged by P.S. SMITHSON---."
