According to his migration records, John Gay was born in County Fermanagh, Ireland, in about 1835.[1] He was the son of Thomas Gay and Jane Marshall.
His family migrated to New South Wales as bounty immigrants via the ship Margaret, arriving 1841. John was listed as being 6 years old.[1]
John married Mary Quirk in Queensland, Australia, on the 11th of October, 1866.[2] According to information on Ancestry, she had arrived in Rockhampton via the ship Utopia in 1862.
He died on the 4th of May 1909,[3] aged 73, and was buried in the Catholic portion of the South Rockhampton cemetery.[4][5]
Death registration gives birth year as 1841, but age on gravestone fits age on arrival in Australia. Mother's first name is wrong on death reg.
