John Jay had served as a Corporal in Company D, 9th Illinois Infantry during the Spanish-American War (ca 1898-1900). Afterwards he was a Ferryman at Sellers Landing, Battery Rock, Lambtown, Illinois. He married first Mary Thomas Adkins 8 Feb 1872 in Hardin County Illinois. Ceremony performed by Willis Littrill, Justice of the Peace. He married second Clara Stevens 25 Nov 1900 in Hardin County, Illinois, at the Blakley Residence. Clara was the widow of his brother, Alexander, Jr. John Jay is buried in the Masonic Cemetery, Cave-in-Rock, Hardin County, Illinois. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound from his old army rifle because he had cancer and asthma. At the time, a niece/step-daughter was living with and taking care of him. She heard the shot during the night.
