Biography

Augusta Henrietta Friederike Gerbes (known as ) was born on 23 May 1846 in Lautenthal, Hanover, Prussia. She was the daughter of Johanne Henriette Louise Orlamünder (known as Louisa, born 1802) and carpenter Christian Gerbes (born 1800).

As both her parents had previous relationships she had a number of older half siblings.

From her mother:

• Johann Friederich Daniel (Fritz) Fischer, born 18 Aug 1823 in Goltzen, Brandenburg, Prussia. Married Augusta Friederike Cristiane Uhe (1823 - 1882) and had 9 children. Died 14 Aug 1896 in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
• Julius August Heinrich Friedrich Töpfer (known as August), born 9 Sep 1836 in Lautenthal. Married Mary Ann Walters and had 2 sons. Was murdered on the goldfields in Wongungarra, Victoria, Australia in September 1870.
• Juliane Wilhelmine Töpfer (known as Julia), born around 1841 in Wildemann, Germany. Married Carl Hermann Holzberger in 1857 and had 9 children. Died 25 Oct 1913 in Brunswick, Victoria, Australia.

In 1847, aged 1, she emigrated to Australia with her family. "The ship "Hermann von Beckerath" departed from Bremen via Rio de Janeiro and the Cape of Good Hope in wild storms, arriving on the shores of Spencer Gulf which was alight with wild bush fires"^{[1] [2]} and docking at Port Adelaide on 15 Dec 1847. The passenger list notes her family: Christian (47); Louise (45); Christian (28); Carl (19); August (10); Juliane (6) and Augusta (1). They all travelled under the Gerbes surname. ^[3]

Augusta had 11 children.
