Biography

The daughter of John Gibson and his second wife, Lena (Frost) Gibson, Ruth Gibson was born in Dansville, New York^[1] in 1920, residing there with her family.^[2][3] Her father died in 1932; in 1940, Ruth and her mother lived in West Sparta, New York, where Ruth worked as a book binder, working for a book publishing company.^[4]

Ruth married Howard Leon Hamsher, the son of Orville Leman Hamsher and Myrtle Ellen Carter, marrying in Nunda, New York on August 31, 1940.^{[citation needed]} They had one son together. Her husband enlisted in the United States Army during World War I, enlisting as a Private 1st Class in the 119th Infantry Regiment of the 30th Infantry Division. He was killed in action near Hamelin, Germany, receiving a posthumous Purple Heart medal.

In 1950, Ruth lived in Dansville, New York with her son and her mother.^[5] No one in the household listed an occupation or cited any income, on the 1950 federal census.

Ruth Hamsher passed away at the Livingston County Skilled Nursing Faciility in Geneseo, New York after a brief illness.^[6]at the age of 78,^[7] residing last in Dansville, New York.^[8] She is buried at Oaklawn Cemetery in West Sparta, New York.^[6]
