Biography

Peter Gibson lived for most of his long life in the townland of Fodry, where he was born and died.[1] [2]

Peter inherited the Gibson family property in the townland of Fodry on the Loop Head peninsula in Co. Clare after his marriage, while his brother Paddy inherited the property in Moneen.

Birth

The birthdate on Peter's birth certificate[3] is one day after the baptism date in the Carrigaholt parish registers.

The 1901 census[4] says that Peter was only 30, although he was already 35. The 1911 census says correctly that he was 45. His Clare Champion obituary says that he was 94, although he was only 90!

Baptism

Peter was baptised in Carrigaholt parish on MAY 21st 1865 (PETER GIBSON from FODERA MARTIN GIBSON & MARY ? Margaret ?? KEATING ? CURTIN ??? or ?utine MARGARET GRIFFIN Revd Michael Moloney C.C.)

Obituary

From Clare Champion of 9 Jul 1955, p.2, col. C:

MR. PETER GIBSON
FODERA, KILBAHA
The death of Mr. Peter Gibson, aged 94 years, took place on the 25th June at his residence in Fodera, Kilbaha. Son of the late Mr. Martin Gibson, Moneen on whose lands was erected Moneen Church which replaced the "Little Ark" in which the clergy were forced to celebrate Mass in the Penal Days, the deceased was one of the oldest men in the parish. He was blessed with good health, a retentive memory and was a mine of information concerning local folk- lore, landlordism, evictions and the "Little Ark." Although he attained a ripe old age, he was hale and hearty to the very end. He was just, upright and conscientious in his intercourse with his neighbours. He died a happy, peaceful and holy death, resigned to God's holy will after living a devoted and good Christian life.
The remains, followed by a huge concourse of people were removed to Moneen Church on Sunday, 26 June, and on the following day Solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated by Very Rev. M. Garry, Pastor, Har- rison, N.J., U.S.A.; deacon, Rev. T. McNamara, C.C., Carrigaholt; sub- deacon, Rev. J. Kelly, C.C., Kilbally- owen; chanters, Very Rev. M. Mc- Kenna, P.P., Kilballyowen, and Rev. J. Campbell, C.C., Kilkee.
The funeral which took place to the family burial ground at Kil- trellig was one of the largest ever seen in the area, and included members of the Clare Co. Council, Kilkee Town Commissioners and other public bodies and organis- ations. Very Rev. M. Garry offic- iated at the graveside and was assisted by Very Rev. M. McKenna, Rev. J. Kenny and Rev. P. Fennell. The chief mourners were Mrs. Margaret Gibson, widow; Br. M. Gibson, C.B.S., Limerick, Br. J. Gibson, C.B.S., Dun Laoire, Patrick, Thomas, Michael, Peter, Joseph and Bernard, sons; Mrs. A. McMahon, Kilkee, Mrs. N. Mullane, Rathkeale, Mrs. K. Murphy, London, and Mrs. P. Cunningham, New York, daugh- ters; Mrs. Cotter, Mullagh, sister; Bernard and Tom, brothers. The Christian Brothers present at the funeral were Rev. Brother T. A. McDonogh, Superior, Limerick; Rev. Brother Lyons, Superior, Kilrush; Rev. Brothers [sic] J. J. Cummins, Sup- erior; Brothers J. J. Brady, J. G. O'Reilly, J. E. Sheehan, E. F. Cass, E. O'Sullivan, L. Cotter, J.V. O'Sul- livan, J. K. Elliot, J. T. Collins, J. L. Kennedy, J. J. Phelan, T. N. O'Con- nor and B. L. Nolan.

The same issue of the Clare Champion (p.7, col. A) contains the following acknowledgement notice:

Gibson, Fodra, Kilbaha. - The wife and family of the late Peter Gibson, Fodra, Kilbaha, wish to thank all those who sympathised with them in their recent bereave- ment; all who sent Mass Cards, telegrams and letters of sympathy; all who attended the removal of the remains, the Mass and funeral; also the Clergy and Christian Brothers. Trusting this will be accepted by all in grateful acknow- ledgement.
