Herbert Joseph Giddens was born in 1909 in Sutton, Cambridgeshire, a son of Herbert Giddens and Agnes Read (Barnes) Giddens. His birth was registered in Ely, Cambridgeshire, in the third quarter of 1909.^[1]

The 1911 Census (enumerated 2 April 1911), recorded 29-year-old farm labourer Herbert Giddens and his 26-year-old wife Agnes Read Giddens at West End, Sutton, Cambridgeshire, England. They had been married 3 years as of the 1911 census and had two children, 5-month-old Nancie Elizabeth and her older brother Herbert Joseph, who was one year old. Agnes was the mother of three children, of whom only the two were living. All family members were born in Sutton.^[2]
