Alfred was born between April and June 1867 (possibly at the Ship Inn, in High Street) in the Village of Sutton (aka Sutton-in-the-Isle), on the high ground of the Isle of Ely, near the Cathedral City of Ely, near the University City of Cambridge, in Cambridgeshire, England[1]. His parents were Butcher/Publican, Samuel Giddens and Mary Ann Knight.
Baptism
He is baptized on the 28 July 1867 at the Parish Church of St. Andrews, High Street, in the Village of Sutton (aka Sutton-in-the-Isle), on the high ground of the Isle of Ely, near the Cathedral City of Ely, near the University City of Cambridge, in Cambridgeshire, England[2][3].
Marriage
Alfred (Giddens) marries Ruth (Norman) between July and September 1906 in the Cathedral City of Ely, about 14 miles (23 km) north-northeast of the University City of Cambridge, in Cambridgeshire, England[4].
Alfred appears in the 1871 Census living with his parents Samuel (Giddens) and Mary Ann (Knight), along with siblings Ernest and Minnie (Giddens) at Ships Inn, High Street, in the Village of Sutton (aka Sutton-in-the-Isle), on the high ground of the Isle of Ely, near the Cathedral City of Ely, near the University City of Cambridge, in Cambridgeshire, England[5]. Alfred is still living with his parents with the arrival of the 1881 Census. They are still at High Street, in the Village of Sutton and he lives with his siblings Ernest, Minnie, Arthur, Laura Knight and Ellen Edith (Giddens)[6].
He disappears from both the 1891 and 1901 Census records only to appear now married to Ruth (Norman) and living with her son, Percy Aubrey (Norman) and their children Laura and Samuel (Giddens) in the 1911 Census. They reside at Cambridge Road, in the City of Ely, Cambridgeshire, England[7].
Occupation
The Census of 1911 records Alfred's occupation as being a Boot Maker. However, he enlists in the City of Ely, Cambridgeshire at the beginning of the War and is attached to the 100th Protection Company. Royal Defence Regiment. His Regimental number was 24808 and he had attained the rank of Acting Lance Corporal when he died[8][9].
Death
Alfred (Giddens) passes away on the 6 April 1918 at the Howard-de-Walden Auxiliary Hospital, Marsham Street, in the Town of Maidstone (of which the River Medway runs through the centre of the town), in Kent, England. He was 50 years old and the cause of his death was Bronchial Pneumonia[10].
