Biography

Marriage

Margaret Gifford, possibly a widow as her name is given in the Ipswich records as "Mrs. Margrett Giffard," married John Cogswell on 22 Jul 1674, in Ipswich, in the Massachusetts Bay Colony.[1]

Margaret and John had seven children whose births appear in the Ipswich records: [2]

  • Gifford Cogswell (b. 4 Aug 1679)
  • Sarah Cogswell (b. 16 Sep 1681)
  • Elizabeth Cogswell (b. 1 Aug 1677)
  • [[Cogswell-233|Margaret (Cogswell) Hawkes (b. 6 Sep 1675)
  • Mary Cogswell (b. 1685)
  • Samuel Cogswell (b. 23 Feb 1693/4)
  • [[Cogswell-230|Susannah (Cogswell) Parsons (b. 5 May 1691)

It should be noted that, at the birth of Samuel Cogswell, on 23 Feb 1693/4, the record indicated that the father was "John, Sr.," which would seem to indicate that there had been a birth, not reflected in the surviving records, of a child named John. Indeed, in the next generation, there is a John Cogswell, Jr. siring children in Ipswich.

Mrs. was a title of respect, not necessarily of marital status. Since her father was a doctor (named Gifford), one can assume that was the case here.
