Biography

This profile is part of the Gilbert Name Study.

Mary Edwards was born in St Erth, Cornwall. She was the 5th of 13 children born to John Gilbart and his wife Elizabeth née Huthnance.

Mary was christened in the parish church of St Erth on 3 June 1805.

On 14 March 1826 she married Thomas Edwards (1794-1871).

Mary and Thomas had 9 children:

  1. Thomas 1826–1908
  2. John Gilbart 1829–1912
  3. Elizabeth 1832–1850
  4. James 1835–1916
  5. Mary Ninnis 1838–1922
  6. William Ninnis 1839–1911
  7. Francis 1842–1844
  8. Benjamin Gilbart 1844–1919
  9. Francis Gilbart 1848–1913

In 1849 they emigrated to Australia on the Lysander. Mary's sister Sarah had been in Australia with her husband Francis Tuckfield since 1838.[1]

Mary died at Bungaree near Ballarat aged 61 in 1867 and is buried in the Ballarat Old Cemetery Wesleyan area section 8 row 2 grave 9.
