James was born 13 Dec 1840 in Goffstown, New Hampshire, United States.^[1]

James was living in Prairie City, Kansas when he enlisted in the Union Army on 25 Aug 1862 as a Private in Company E, 12th Regiment, Kansas Infantry. He was mustered in on 26 Sep 1862. He mustered out with the Regiment on 30 Jun 1865. ^[2][3]The 12th Kansas Infantry was organized at Paola, Kansas in September 1862 and mustered in for 3 years. During James' time in service, the regiment's major engagements were the Camden Expedition and the Battle of Jenkins Ferry. ^[4]

James married Alice R. Dana in 1870 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.^[1]

He studied law in Topeka, Kansas, and later lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Chicago, Illinois. He came to Pasadena, California in 1879 and engaged in various successful ventures.^[1]

James was active in the First Congregational Church, Masonic order and the order of Knights of Pthias. He was a charter member and the first commander of Godfrey Post, G.A.R.^[1]

He passed away 25 Sep 1892 in Pasadena, Los Angeles, California, United States and is buried in Mountain View Cemetery and Mausoleum in Altadena, California.^[1]

James is survived by his wife Alice.^[1]
