Biography

Russell Gillespie was born in Appalachia, in Kentucky.

Russell E. Gillespie was born on 4 Jan 1906 in Yale, Bath, Kentucky, United States. Yale was a licking River community about 12 miles southeast of Owingsville, Kentucky. The area was largely claimed by the Cave Run Lake project in the 1960s. Russell's parents were William John Gillespie and Mattie (Mynhier) Gillespie. He is seen with his parents and siblings in the 1910 & 1920 US census records of Menifee County, Kentucky.[1][2]

Russell married Louise Powers in Wayne County, Indiana on 31 Aug 1935. [3] He was a printer at a biscuit company and was residing in Dayton, Ohio at his marriage to Louise. His parents were William John Gillespie and Mattie (Mynhier) Gillespie of Yale, Kentucky.

Louise & Russell are seen in the City Directories of Dayton, Ohio from 1938 to 1959. In 1938 they were homeowners at 1174 Wild Wood Avenue. Russell was listed as a printer.[4] From 1939-1944 they are seen as homeowners at 1603 Detzen Avenue. This was a few houses away from Louise's brother Oren Powers who resided at 1622 Detzen Avenue. Russel continued as a printer at Loose-Wiles Biscuit company through 1942, but changed jobs to Specialty Printing Company by 1944.[5] Louise and Russell are also seen in the 1940 US Census of Dayton, Montgomery, Ohio.[6] Sometime after 1944 they relocated to 3807 East Third Street, where they are seen from 1955 to 1959.[7]

Louise and Russell were parents of two children: Daryl Gene Gillespie and Sharon Jane (Gillespie) Herrman. Daryl was born in 1937 and died in 2003. He is seen in the 1940 US Census. Sharon was born in 1947 and is still living.

Russell passed away (age 75) on 27 May 1981 at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Dayton.[8][9] and was buried in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens, New Carlisle, Clark, Ohio.[10] His obituary is seen in the Dayton Daily Newspaper on 28 May 1981.[11]

Louise was a 23 year employee of Rike's department store in Dayton and attended East Park Church of God per her obituary. She passed away (age 94) on 11 February 2008 in Miamisburg, Montgomery, Ohio.[12] and was buried beside Russell in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens.[13] Her obituary is seen at Legacy.com. [14]
