Dorsey Jackson Gilley Sr. was born about 1845 in Henry County, Virginia to parents Leftwich Gilley and Mary ___. He is first cited in the 1850 census as "Doney" Gilley, with parents Leftwich and Mary.

Dorsey married Louisa Virginia Gilley on 4 Sep 1863 in Rockingham, North Carolina. Before he would be able to see his first child, Dorsey was drafted into Company K of the 38th Virginia Infantry. He died of disease at the Chimbarazo Hospital in Richmond, Virginia on 30 Jul 1864. His son Dorsey Jackson Gilley, Jr. would be born less than a month later, 19 Aug 1864.
