James was born probably in Warren County, Tennessee, on April 25, 1866, to John Gilley and Martha Wilson.[1][2] He married Sarah Brown, parents unknown, in Cannon County, on July 16, 1885.[3] They had five known children:[4][5]
1886-1952: Martha "Mattie" Emmaline, m. John Thomas Casey, 1904
1890-1983: James Wesley, Jr., m. Allie Cunningham, 1914
1891: Birdie Elizabeth, m. George Gothard, 1908
1892/4-1977: Alma Ammon, m. Arthur Warren Edward Lance, 1917
1896: Izzie B.
James died on August 8, 1912, and was buried at Trousdale Cemetery, in Trousdale, Tennessee.[6] Sarah lived another forty-eight years but is not known to have remarried.[7][8] She died on June 7, 1960, and was buried near James at Trousdale Cemetery.[9]
