4th Son of Dr. John Gilman and Mary Ann Ellis. Member of the Drapers Company, Liveryman of Goldsmiths Company, Freeman of City of London 1830, Life Fellow of Royal Geographical Society. Baptized 1809 in Mincing Lane Church. Godparents: William Ellis (Uncle), George Cotton and Sarah James (Great-Aunt) Engaged in trade with China and India. Lived for a while in East Maitland, N.S.W. and Singapore. Married in 1839 to Amelia Christiana Rusden, 2nd daughter of the Rev. George Keylock Rusden (Founder Member of the Hong Kong & Shanghai bank) and Anne Townsend, at East Maitland Chapel, N.S.W. Returned to Hornsey in 1846. Founded Aston & Co. Tea Merchants, London (Later Gilman & Co.). They owned the clipper "Taeping" which, in 1866, won the great clipper race among nine of the world's fastest sailing ships, racing from Chow Foo to London in 90 days, seven days faster than normal.
