"...At the age of twenty-four [Harrison] chose as a helpmate on life's journey Miss Amanda Gist, their marriage being celebrated on April 14, 1839. She was born in Muskingum County, April 25, 1819, but her people were from Maryland and Virginia..." [1]

Harrison and Amanda spent four years in the Buckeye State and then removed in 1843 to Greene County, Wisconsin Territory, where they remained for seven years. [1][7][8]
Mr. Butler always kept ahead of the railroads and in the spring of 1850 came to Iowa, claiming the land on which he now resides..." [1][7][9]
"...It was entirely unimproved but had a fine spring and grove upon it, and with his usual foresight he saw that by cultivation it would make a fine farm and after years have verified his prediction. He claimed the land on the 7th of June, 1849, purchasing it when it came into market and moved his family there on in the spring of 1850..."[1]
They " built a cabin in which they lived until 1855. then they built the house they now occupy. Harrison is one of the oldest setters in Westfield Twp, and the county..." [7]
Amanda and Harrison Butler farmed in Section 5 and sections 3,6, and 9 in Westfield Township, located between the towns of West Union and Fayette.[10][11]
Harrison and Amanda were "faithful and consistent members of the Baptist Church, in which he has been a local preacher for more than a third of a century. "[1]

Amanda Butler Obituary
Mrs. Harrison Butler, whose death we mentioned last week, as having occurred at West Union, was an old resident of the county. She was married to her husband, Harrison Butler, April 14, 1839, and came to this county with him in 1850. Her husband died about a year ago. Six children, two daughters and four sons survive their parents, being Mrs. Mary E. Finch and Mrs. Sarah E. Hough, of Oran township, and Joseph, George, John D. and William H. Butler, all residents of this county. [2]
