Birth & Parents: Jesse Glancy was born in 1756 in York County, Pennsylvania. He was the first-born son of Terrence Glancy, 1730–1784, and his wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" Neal, 1720-1769. They had been married on 4 Dec 1754 in Wilmington, New Castle County, Delaware. Terrence Glancy was the son of a Scotts-Irish immigrant who arrived in America in 1726 with enough cash in a small trunk (lined with a newspaper dated 1726) enabling him to buy good farm-land. The trunk is said to have remained in the family's possession well into the 20th Century. [1]
American Patriot: Jesse Glancy was 20 years old when the 13 American Colonies declared their independence from Great Britain. Like many other Scotts-Irishmen, he was an ardent American patriot. He served in the Continental Army under General George Washington at the battles of Brandywine and Monmouth and also was with General Lafayette at Yorktown in 1783. He fought for several years until victory over the British was won.
Marriage and Children: Jesse Glancy married a Pennsylvania Quaker lass: Rachel Copeland, shortly after the American Revolution ended in 1783 in York County, Pennsylvania. Jesse no doubt converted to the Quaker faith at the time of their marriage. It would have been unusual for a Quaker to serve so many years in the Continental Armies, even during the Revolution, as their faith eschews violence and military service. [2]
Jesse and Rachel Glancy first lived and farmed in York County, Pennsylvania. In December 1804, shortly after Ohio joined the Union, they and their 5 small children crossed the Appalachian Mountains settling in the new state, where the Federal government had recently awarded Revolutionary War veterans large tracts of land. They are said to have arrived in Williamsburg, Clermont County, Ohio, on Christmas Eve in 1804.[3]
Rachel and Jesse Glancy had 8 children: 5 born in York County, Pennsylvania and 3 born in Clermont County, Ohio: [4]
Death & Burial: Rachel (Copeland) Glancy passed away in her 70th year on 3 January 1829 in Clermont County, Ohio. She was buried at Rapp Cemetery, Belfast, Clermont County, Ohio, USA.[5] Her husband survived her passing for another 2 & 3/4 years. Jesse Glancy passed away after being mauled by a wild bear at 75 years old on 16 Sep 1831 in Owensville, Clermont County, Ohio. He was buried at the Rapp Cemetery next to his wife. [6]
