Biography

Hance Micalle Glance (aka John Michael Glantz) arrived in Philadelphia, as a passenger on the ship Adventure, 23 September 1732, at the age of 4. He was accompanied by his parents and a 9 year old sister.

Sometime around 1745-1748, the family relocated to Virginia, settling in what was then Lunenburg Co. In the early 1750's, John Michael left Virginia and settled in what was then Bladen Co., NC, most likely in the area of Dutch Buffalo Creek and Rocky River, near Concord in today's Cabarrus Co., NC. A number of county boundary changes took place resulting in this area being part of Anson, Mecklenburg, and Cabarrus Counties. John Michael's sister, Anna Barbara, and her husband John Hagler, made the same move to NC at around the same time.

Little appears to be known about John Michael's married life, but we do know he was married to a Margaret MNU in 1783. And we know Elisabeth Glaunce was married to John Michael at the time of his death (c1807).

John Michael does not appear in the 1810 census. He probably died c1807 in what is today's Cabarrus Co.

Tentative Children of John Michael Glantz

1. Jeremiah Claunch, born 10 February 1756 in Anson Co., NC (became Mecklenburg in 1762) and died 30 November 1840 in Union Co., NC (dates from tombstone placed in 1998). Jeremiah enlisted around May 1778 in Mecklenburg Co., NC. After the war he remained in Mecklenburg Co., NC and made a deposition for a pension 21 November 1832 (S-8219). That says he was born in 1756 and was age 77 at the time of application. His son, John A. Clontz also made a pension application under Jeremiah’s service, 9 November 1852. At that time, he reported that Jeremiah had died 30 November 1840 (Union Co., NC) and the only surviving children of Jeremiah were: Henry, Jeremiah, Sarah, Jacob, John A., and Catherine. Jeremiah (Sr.) reportedly married Anna Catherina Long 2 December 1782 in Mecklenburg Co., NC.

2, George Clontz (RW vet), born May 1760 Mecklenburg Co., NC, died 20 October 1838, married Chloe Klein/Cline c1783 (see other details in pension W4924), moved to Burke Co., NC c1802.
