Jean Glendining, daughter of William Glendining and Alison Scott, was born or baptized on 3 Jul 1833 in Ettrick, Selkirkshire, Scotland.[1] She was at least the fourth child, and probably the fifth or sixth. Jean was born at Cacrabank (a farm in Ettrick)[2].
The family lived there for some time, and at least three more children were born in Cacrabank before 1841. It appears that her father William worked on the farm.[3][4] It seems that her oldest brother Thomas had already left the home in 1841.
Ten years later, in 1851, the family was living in Fairnilee Haughhead, in nearby Galashiels, about 20 miles northeast of Cacrabank.[5] William was now working as a Shepherd (which, indeed, may have been his job all along). Her mother is listed as Alice. Many of Jean / Joan's siblings were no longer living at home; only Margaret, Joan, and Isabella remain. There are, however, a lodger and a number of visitors: James Bell, a Dry Stone Dyker, is the lodger, and James and Margaret Beattie the visitors. James Beattie was also a shepherd, and this couple is a few years younger than William and Alison.[6]
On 2nd December 1853 [7], Jean / Jane married John Lauder, "both of Gilmanscleuch"[8]. The marriage banns were published in the records of the parish of Kirkhope, about halfway between Cacrabank and Fairnilee.[9] Her name is given here as "Jane", and she appears to have gone by this name for the rest of her life.
They had a child, George, about a month after they were married, born in Galashiels, her home.[10]
Soon thereafter, they moved to Selkirk, where they lived for the rest of their lives, in a variety of locations, in 1861,[11][12][13] in 1871,
[14][15] and 1881.
[16][17]
John worked at a variety of agricultural jobs. In 1861, he was a "Labourer"[11], in 1871 a "Sawmillman"[14], in 1874 a "Wood-forester"[7], and in 1881 a dairyman.[16]
They also had eleven children that we know of, starting with George and ending with Charles, some 20 years later.[11][14][7]
Secondary evidence suggests that in 1868, Jane's father William died. [18]
Soon thereafter, some time between 1871 and 1881, Jane's mother Alison moved in with Jane and John.[16] Secondary evidence suggests that Alison died in 1888, at the advanced age of 93.[19]
In 1896, John died, at the age of 68. Mother's maiden name was Kelly.[20]
Scotlandspeople has a record from the parish of Ettrick showing the birth on 30 May 1833 to William Glendining and "Alice Scott" of a daughter Jean. It states that she was born at Cacrabank and baptized on 3 Jul. by Rev W. Smith, parish Minister.[1]
In the 1841 Census, William and Alison were living with their family in Ettrick. The household includes William (M, 42), Alison (F, 40), Henry (M, 20), Margaret (F, 12), William (M, 10), Jean (F, 8), Isabella (F, 4), Michael (M, 2), and Sarah Armstrong (F, 20). The location is listed as Cacrabank, and there is an indecipherable-to-me record of the number of uninhabited buildings... 22? U? Not sure. William's occupation is listed as "Ag/Lab", presumably agricultural laborer. Sarah is listed as ... "F. L.", if I'm reading that correctly. Could be "Farm Laborer". William and Sarah are listed as born out of county, the others as born in county.[3]
In the 1851 census, William and Alison were living at Fairnilee Haughead(?), Galashiels Parish, Selkirkshire. The household now contains William(M, 54), "Alice", (F, 53), Daughter Margt. (F, 23), daughter "Joan" (presumably the same as "Jean") (F, 17), daughter Isabella (F, 15), lodger James Bell (M, 60), visitor James Beattie (M, 49), and visitor Margt. Beattie (M, 46). It appears that Henry, William, and Michael are now missing. William is now listed as a Shepherd, Margaret as... NHS?, James Bell as a "Dry Stone Dyker", and James Beattie as a Shepherd. William is listed as being born in Roxburgh / Hawick. Alice is listed as having been born in Selkirk / Yarrow. All of the children are listed as having been born in Ettrick. [5]
Finally! Okay, ancestry provided the needed tip; in later years, she went by "Jane" rather than "Jean". Now the floodgates open.
Scotlandspeople has a record of "proclamations of purpose of" marriage of John Lauder and Jane Glendinning on 28 Nov 1853 "both at Gilmanscleuch in the parish of Kirkhope." If other records are a guide, I suspect the actual marriage took place several weeks later. [9]
George was born about a month after they got married.[10]
The 1861 census as transcribed by FreeCen.org.uk shows the family living in "Raelees Private House", a house having two rooms with windows, in the "Selkirk Landward" parish of Selkirkshire. The household includes
John Lauder (M, 33), Labourer, born Selkirkshire/Stow
Jane (F, 27), wife, Labourer's wife, born Selkirkshire/Ettrick
George (M, 7), son, scholar, born Selkirkshire/Galashiels
Alison (F, 5), daughter, Scholar, born Selkirkshire/Selkirk
Elizabeth (F, 3), daughter, born Selkirkshire/Selkirk
Mary (F, 1), daughter, born Selkirkshire/Selkirk
The birthplaces of the children suggest that they moved to Selkirk between five and eight (seven plus one) years ago, probably just when they got married.
[11]
The 1871 census for the civil parish of Selkirk, quoad sacra parish of Caddonfoot, records the household of John and Jane Lauder living in one of the Yair Cottages (the census refers to the "Ditto Cottages", following upward leads to the "Yair Mansion"). The household includes
John Lauder (M, 4X(2nd digit illeg.)), a "Sawmillman" from Selkirkshire/Stow
Jane Lauder (F, 37), from Sellkirkshire/Ettrick,
Elizabeth Lauder (F, 15),
Mary Lauder (F, 11/6, presumably 11 years 6 months?),
William Glendinning Lauder (M, 5),
Margaret Lauder (F, 3), and
Helen Lauder (F, 9 months).
All children are listed as having been born in Selkirkshire/Selkirk. They are listed as living in a house having two rooms with windows.
[14]
A record of Charles' birth in 1874 indicates that John Lauder was at that time a Wood-forester. It also gives the marriage date of John and Jane as 2 Dec, 1853, at Galashiels.[7]
The 1881 census, as transcribed by the LDS library, shows the family living in Selkirk, Selkirkshire, at 14 Ettrick Road. The household includes
John Lauder, (M, 52), Dairyman, from "Caddon, Selkirk" (NB different labeling of birthplace)
Jane Lauder, (F, 46), from Ettrick, Selkirk
William Lauder, (M, 15), son, Wool Mill Labourer
Margaret Lauder, (F, 13), daur, scholar
Helen Lauder (F, 10), daur, scholar
Elizabeth Lauder (7, F), daur, scholar
Charles Lauder (6, M), son
Alison Scott (F, 82), mother-in-law, widowed, born Ettrick, Selkirk
The children are all listed as having been born in Selkirk, Selkirk. Jane's mother Alison is now living with them (and goes by her maiden name, interesting).
[16]
Scotlandspeople records her death on 6 Sep 1903. It indicates that "Jane Lauder" was the widow of John Lauder, a dairyman, and that she was living at 21 Ettrick Road when she died. It states that she was female, and 68 years of age. It lists her father as William Glendinning and her mother as Alison Glendinning maiden surname Scott. These key details confirm that this record is indeed referring to the right person, and that "Jean" and "Jane" are the same person. It states that she died of "inflammatory diarrhoea", poor thing. The death was reported by William E. Lauder, her son, listed as present.[21]
