This Alice Glover profile was created while deconflating the Alice Glover of Lydd, Kent, England who married James Bates. The wife of James Bates was originally set up as a conflation of three women:
Alice of London, daughter of Sir William Glover and Dame Ann Goverard Glover was christened as Alice Glover the daughter of William Glover, Dyer at All Hallows the Less, in the City of London, on 6th August 1592.[3]
When her father William wrote his will on 17 October 1603 he only identified his married 'daughter Roberts' (plus her husband and their daughter Ann) - his unmarried offspring were just listed as 'my six children now living'.[4]
When her mother Ann wrote her will on 25 Nov 1612 she named her children in much more detail including daughter Alice "Burradell" (following the convention of naming her married daughters by their married name).[5]
Although the marriage has not been found, it was probably in or around London and probably between about 1609 when Alice would have been 17 and 1612 when she was listed as Alice Burradell in her mother's will.
Some possible clues come from the nearby parish registers of Wandsworth and Beddington. A set of baptisms of children of Thomas Barrowdale/Barrodall appears at All Saints, Wandsworth, Surrey about 6 miles from where Dame Ann Goverard Glover was buried. The first such child seems to be Elizabeth "Barawdal" baptized 9 Dec 1604 as daughter of Thomas[6] followed by Ann "Barrowdall" on 7 Nov 1606 and RIchard on 24 Jan 1610/11.
Then daughter Alice was christened 9 Jan 1613/14 followed by a Joane and a Gyles at the same location. Gyles was buried 11 Sep 1619 as son of Thomas at Wandsworth[7] and Joane married Richard White at Wandsworth on 15 Jan 1637/38 per that parish register page 7.
But the mother of the children is not listed and a marriage for Thomas Barrowdale does not appear in that timeframe in the Wandsworth transcribed parish register although the 1614 christening of daughter Alice does appear in those transcribed registers without a mother's name.
If all these children were from the same wife of Thomas, then he did NOT marry Alice Glover since his first child was born in 1604 when Alice was 12 years old. BUT, he may have had a first wife who died after the birth of Richard in Jan 1611, then remarried to Alice Glover and had children Alice, Joane and Gyles with her? This timing would meet the requirement of Alice's marriage to a "Burradell" by the November 1612 writing of her mother's will.
Alternatively, Alice "may" have been the wife of a John "Borrodell" who, given the unusual name, could easily have been a relative of Thomas and John Borrodell definitely had a wife named Alice.
An Alice "Borrodell" wife of John was buried about 4 miles from Wandsworth (site of the above Borrowdale baptisms) at St. Mary Beddington on 6 Sep 1636.[8] Sadly, her daughters Mary and Eizabeth died within a few days of her on September 9th and 20th respectively. Mary and Elizabeth's burial transcriptions list them as daughters of John and all three note that they died of the plague.[9] as did Elizabeths.
If this WAS the Alice Glover who was married by 1612, she had daughters Mary and Elizabeth 24 years after that marriage (both baptized on 13 Jan 1635/36, possibly twins?) at age 43, certainly not impossible but then we would expect to find multiple younger children. A John Borrodell then married a Joan Norman 6 months later at Beddington on 27 Mar 1637 so possiby he had other young children to take care of.
Another woman of the same name was buried 5 years later on 16 July 1641 at St. Mary Beddington (listed as Beddington & Morden on findmypast.co.uk).[10][11] Interestingly, the archive holding this record is the College of Arms. Does this further indicate that she was the daughter of Sir William Glover? There was no supplemental text in the transcription such as "wife" or "widow" or "daughter". A John Borrodell clearly married an Alice who died in 1636. Thomas Borrodell does not "seem" to have married Alice Glover since he had children starting in 1604. Who was the Alice Borrodell who died in 1641? The clear candidate is the Alice born in 1614 as daughter of Thomas. This makes her 27 and unmarried at her death which helps explain the lack of supplemental text such as "daughter of" or "widow/wife of".
John Borrodell himself was buried 14 Jan 1661/62 at St. Mary Beddington although again with no supplemental text in the transcription.[12] Another cluster of this family name appears about 11 miles away at Leatherhead in the parish register in the mid 1600s.
And finally a Thomas Borrodell was buried about 10 miles from St Mary Beddington on 13 May 1675 at Warlingham, Surrey.[13] Possibly the father of the Alice, joan and Gyles baptized at Wandsworth?
This is not the 'Alice Burradale' who was buried at Dunston Lincolnshire on 16 September 1616 - as well as this burial at Dunston there are also baptisms for Robert Barrowdalle (1613) and George Burradale (1616) who were the sons of Richard Burradale. Richard Barradale married Alce Squire on 21st May 1609 at Metheringham in Lincolnshire.
Interestingly, a book that includes information about the children of William Glover states, without providing details, that he had a daughter Alice who died unmarried before October 1603.[14]
A monumental inscription to Sir William (in the chancel at St. Stephen's on Coleman Street where Sir William and Dame Ann were buried) quoted in this book names Alice as one of his children. Sir William died in December 1603 so clearly Alice was alive AFTER October 1603 and further was named as "Alice Burradell" in the 1612 will of her mother. Why, given that Alice was so clearly alive, this book by George Cokayne asserted that she died is unknown but it is not the first time that Cokayne's accuracy has been called into question.
