Biography

Sarah Gooden was base born to Alice Gooden and was baptised on 27 May 1832 at the church of St Peter, Great Bolton, Lancashire, England. At the time of her birth, her mother was living at Breightmet, near Bolton, Lancashire. No father's name was given on her baptism record.

Sarah gained a younger sister, also base born, when she was 9 years old. By this time the family had moved to Sharples, still in the greater Bolton area. Sarah's mother Alice is working as a weaver and at the time of the 1841 census, Sarah, her mother and her sister are all spending the evening in separate but neighbouring houses in Lum Street, Bolton. Also in Lum street is Sarah's grandmother Margaret.

In 1848, Sarah gained many step brothers and sisters at the age of 16, along with a relatively stable home, when her mother married the widower John Kay.

In 1851 Sarah is 19 and working as a piercer for a cotton spinner and living with her mother, step father and six siblings.

On 6 Apr 1856 at the age of 24, Sarah married Richard Isherwood at the local St Peter's church in Bolton. Richard was a Stover and bachelor.
