Biography

Robert was born about 1815, probably at New Lairg. He was the son of James Gordon and Isabella.^[1][2]

Robert Gordon married Isabella Matheson.^[3][1] They had:

7. Finlay/Phillip,^[5] b. abt. 1855, settled on part of the family property^[4]
8. Christy Jane,^[5][6] b. abt. 1860, unmarried^[4]

On 23 August 1837, Robert's mother (whom Robert would provide for) and siblings quitclaim to Robert their father James' 300 acre grant,^[2] and on 15 June 1861, Robert and Isabella Gordon sold the southern half of this to Alexander Gordon.^[7] Alexander and Robert are both shown as neighbours owning 150 acres at New Lairg, near the head waters of the West River, in the llustrated Historical Atlas of Pictou County, Nova Scotia.^[8]

He was enumerated with his family at New Lairg in 1871^[5] and 1881.^[6]

Robert Gordon does not seem to appear in the 1891 census, suggesting he died sometime between 1881 and 1891 when there was a gap in death registrations.

In Ward's Farms and Farmers series, Robert Gordon of [New] Lairg was mentioned as marrying Isabella Matheson in the article on her nephew, John Matheson,^[3] and Isabella, the daughter of Finlay Matheson of [New] Lairg was mentioned as marrying Robert Gordon, the son of James Gordon of [New] Lairg in the article on Mrs. Margaret B. Sutherland.^[1] An article was also made on Robert's grandson Robert A. Gordon, who gave more particulars on the family.^[4]
