Nancy Gosnell was born on September 9, 1820 in Baltimore, Maryland, United States, the first daughter of John Benjamin Crooks (1797–1869) and Tabitha W. Cowee (1794–1834). Her parents were married on November 12, 1817 in Washington, Ohio.[1] Her father earned his living as a farmer in Corydon, McKean. Pennsylvania.[2]
In 1850 she is listed in the census as living in District 1, Baltimore Post Office, Baltimore, Maryland with her husband and four of their children. William is listed as working as a laborer.[13]
When the census occurred in 1860, Nancy was living in District 4, Reisterstown, Maryland[19] with her husband and five of their children. The occupation for William was shoemaker and their son, James, was a laborer at age 23, It was noted in the census that Nancy could not read or write.[16]
The 1870 Census shows that Nancy was keeping house, while her husband was employed as a shoemaker. They lived in District 4, Woodensburg Post Office, Reisterstown, Maryland and their value of personal effects is listed as $100. Some of the children were attending school at this time.[18]
According to the census in 1880 they were residing at District 4, Reisterstown, Maryland. Nancy was still keeping house, her husband, William, was a general laborer, James was a farm laborer (listed as head of household), and his brother,Warren, who was a peddler of glassware, at the same address.[20]
Religion
Nancy was known as the oldest member of Reisterstown United Methodist Church, 246 Main Street, Reisterstown, Maryland.[21]
Death
Nancy died on September 1, 1920 in Reisterstown, Baltimore County, Maryland, United States, aged 99. She was a resident of the community all her life.[21] She is buried in the Reisterstown United Methodist Church Cemetery, Reisterstown, Maryland.[22].
