Biography

Benjamin's obituary was published as follows:[1]

BENJAMIN GOSPER.
A mythical link joining the past with the present was snapped by the death of Benjamin Gosper, and the last scion in direct descent of the older generation of a family that has been woven into the history of the Hawkesbury dies out. He bore a name honored and revered not only in this district, but throughout the State, and added lustre to it. There was no more honored man in the Hawkesbury district than the late Benjamin Gosper, and he leaves a family worthy in every to bear the good name. The late John Gosper, who was associated with the progress of Windsor for many years, was a brother of the subject of this notice, and Mr. Jesse Gosper is a nephew. Benjamin Gosper was 72 years of age, and was the son of John Gosper. Almost the whole of his life was spent at Upper Colo, where he acquired valuable property. His health failing somewhat, he gave up work on the farm and settled down to a retired life in Richmond, four or five years ago. He was bereaved of his brave old helpmeet some two years ago, and since then has resided alternately with his sons. He was living with his son William, in Richmond, when he was stricken with pneumonic influenza, and was removed to the Richmond emergency hospital where he passed away on the 23rd June. A family of four survive him, viz., Benjamin (Pitt Town), Mrs. Henry Phipps (Upper Colo), William (Richmond), and James (Upper Colo). A daughter (Mrs E. McMahon), died some years ago, and a son, Hilton, was killed at the war about two years ago. The death of Benjamin Gosper removes one of the kindest hearted and most genuine men that the district contained. Always ready to do a neighborly turn, and possessing large sympathies for a fellow creature in sorrow or distress, and a readiness to do his part in the amelioration of their lot, he will be missed and mourned by a very large circle of friends. The burial took place on the 24th ultimo, the remains being interred in St Matthew's Church of England cemetery, Windsor, where his wife and parents lie buried. Rev. Norman Jenkyn officiated at the service.

Benjamin was buried in St. Matthew's Church of England, Windsor (10R-12).[2]
