Mary Ellen was born at Whynot St, West End, a suburb of Brisbane, Queensland on 28 November, 1897. No medical attendant or nurse was present at her birth which was witnessed by a Mrs Green. Mary Ellen's birth was certified in writing by her mother Catherine Gourlay nee McDevitt, 23 years old, born in Dalby. Her father, James Patrick Goulay, was a 23 year old iron Mouler born in Rockhampton. No previous issue was recorded for either parent.[1]
Mary Ellen married Charles Norman Roseneus Thompson, a labourer, on 7 April, 1917, seven weeks after he enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force for WWI. They were both 19. Charles had Home Leave between 28 and 30 April then left Mary Ellen for active service, embarking on HMAT A15, Port Sydney on 9 May 1917. He served in Suez. Meanwhile, back home, Mary Ellen gave birth to a daughter, Thelma Kathleen, on 16 November 1917. Mary Ellen was not to see her husband again until his service overseas ended in 1919 and he disembarked from HMHS Oxfordshire in Australia on 17 September 1918.
Mary Ellen Thompson died on 15 July 1974.[2]
