Biography

James Grand was an English-born architect based in Toronto, Ontario, in the 1860s and 1870s.[1]

Born in 1819, he was the son of Joseph William Grand, a bricklayer, and Susanna Carter.

He married Mary Ann Burkett in 1840 in London, England.[2] Their daughter Sarah was born in London about 1842.[3] Another daughter, Emily, was born there in 1845.[4]

The Grands emigrated to Quebec before the birth of their son, William, in 1849. Another son, Francis Henry, was born in Quebec City in 1851.[5]

James was recorded in the Canada Census, 1871, living in Toronto with Mary Ann and the following children: William (22), Francis (20), James (14), Kate (10) and Isabella (6).[6] He died that same year; his death is recorded on the Grand gravestone in the All Saints Churchyard, Edmonton, Enfield, London, England.[7]
