Obituary from Philadelphia Inquirer 12/3/2012: GRANITE EDWIN L., D.M.D., age 79, died on December 2, 2012. A beloved family man, distinguished surgeon and teacher, Dr. Granite was loved by all who knew him. He had a warm smile and kind word for everyone. His appetite for adventure was well known and fed by his lifelong love of travel and scuba diving. Active until the end, he was planning yet another shark dive just before becoming ill. His greatest joy, however, was the extraordinary love he shared with his wife of 56 years, Bell Shapiro Granite, with whom he traveled the world to destinations both popular and remote. Dr. Granite was also the much beloved father of daughter Jodi Granite Nash and her fiance, Frank Lynch, son Laurence Granite and his wife Jamie, and adored Poppop of grandchildren Adam and Samantha Nash and Jack and Leo Granite. A graduate of Temple University School of Dentistry and the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Medicine, his Curriculum Vitae includes service in the US Navy, fellowship in numerous dental associations, privileges at multiple hospitals, dozens of awards, and many honors. His charitable services were many, and included traveling to third world countries to rebuild the faces of needy children in indigent communities. He was a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, serving on the Board's Examination Committee for the past three years, and he was this year's honoree at the Delaware Academy of Medicine's Annual Meeting. Of all of his many contributions to the world, Dr. Granite was most proud of his work at Christiana Care, which, upon his retirement just this September, honored him by naming the clinic where he practiced, taught and mentored for decades The Edwin L. Granite, D.M.D., Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Hospital Dentistry Clinic. This facility at Wilmington Hospital provides affordable dental care to uninsured and under-insured patients. Funeral Services will be 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2012 at Congregation Adas Kodesch Shel Emeth, 4412 Washington Boulevard, Wilmington, DE. Contributions in memory of Dr. Granite would be appreciated to the Helen Graham Cancer Center, 4701 Ogletown Stanton Road, Newark, DE 19713 or Congregation Adas Kodesh Shel Emeth. Shiva will be observed at the late residence.
