RIN 1c601b5a-26c1-4362-87eb-21f79081a66a META <metadataxml><content><line><p style="text-align: ;">Donald's discharge papers show that he was born in Strath parish (on the Isle of Skye) in 1814, and signed up for the army in 1838, on Christmas Day, in Perth. He then must have shipped to Ireland for training or to join a larger group, as he marries Bridget the following year. Her name is transcribed in the record as Harley; waiting on the copy of the record to see if it has more details.<p></line><line><p style="text-align: ;">The family then shipped to India to join the regiment there. Margaret was born in January 1840, baptized in Calcutta, then died the following year. The births of their other children can be traced through the regimental records. They had children in India, then back in Scotland (the other Margaret, who became Mrs McKerracher), and in Ireland and Gibraltar. They had no children in China, which may indicate that Bridget and the children did not accompany Donald there.</p></line><line><p style="text-align: ;">Mary is a puzzle. Her obituary states she was born to Sergeant Donald Grant of the 26th Cameronians around 1836-1838 -- she is said to have been 15 at her marriage in Gibraltar in 1852. Records show a Mary born in 1836 in Burr and a Mary A born in 1836 in Ghazeepore. both of these are too early to be our Donald. However, there was another Donald Grant in the 26th Cameronians!
