"DEATH - McDonald. On September 4!h 1884, at her son's residence, Alton Street, Janet Grant McDonald, aged 80 years" NELSON EVENING MAIL, VOLUME XIX, ISSUE 202, 4 SEPTEMBER 1884

The age recorded at death suggests a birth year of 1804. However, from local records it appears that John McDonald (Janet's husband) arrived in Nelson in 1841 aboard the Whitby and Janet later in 1842, with one son aged 9 years, on the Lloyds. In the ship's manifest Janet's age is given as 28 years which would put her birth year as 1814. Unfortunately, the recorded age at death would have been provided by an informant without verification by the registry. On the other hand, it was quite common for migrants to understate their age in order to better qualify for assisted passage. Birth date left blank for now until further support for the correct year is available.
