Alexander was the eldest child of George Gray Sr (c.1768–1844) and his wife, Mary Ligertwood (1776–1857). He was probably born at his parents' home, Knapsleask Farm,[1] in the Aberdeenshire parish of Slains and was baptised in the parish on 20 March 1800.[2] The entry made in the baptismal register was:
"1800 […] March 20th / George Gray in Knaps Leask had a Son baptized (procreate betwixt him & his wife Mary Ligertwood) & named Alexander — witnesses Mr Andrew Mitchell & Andrew Robb".
His date of death and marital status has not been researched..
