Biography

Robert was born in Carmichael, Lanarkshire and was baptised there on 21st December 1792. He was the son of Thomas Gray and Grizel Dickson. [1]

There is no record of his marriage to Margaret Smith which must have taken place about 1813 or early 1814.

Children

In 1841 Robert was 45 years old (1796) and despite living on a farm, he was a carpenter. He lived at Kilmuir in the parish of Carstairs, Lanarkshire with his wife Margaret and children Marion, Robert, Margaret, John, Elizabeth and Jean. Also present was William Muir, aged 15, an apprenctice carpenter. [2]

In 1851 Robert was 58 years old. He lived at Kilmuir in the parish of Carstairs, Lanarkshire with his wife Margaret, children Margaret, John, Elizabeth and Jean and grandson, John Gray aged 2. He was described as a 'farmer of 25 acres'. [3]

In 1861 Robert was aged 68. He lived at Kilmuir in the parish of Carstairs, Lanarkshire with his wife Margaret, children Margaret and Jean and grandchildren John Gray, Thomas Smith (2) and John Tod (1). [4]

Margaret died at Carstairs, Lanarkshire on 30th June 1864. [5]

In 1871 Robert was 78 years old and farmer of '20 acres arable'. The property at 'Kilmoors' immediately follows the village of Ravenstruther. Also present were his daughter Jean Martin, grandchildren William, Robert, Margaret and John, a boarder Thomas McDougall and a servant, Elizabeth Dally. [6]

Robert died on 5th July 1876. At the time he was living at 8 Rosehill Place, Morrison Street, Edinburgh and his death from chronic bronchitis was notified by his son in law, William Martin. [7]
