James was born about 1858 in Scotland. He was the son of William Gray and Jane Smith. [1]
The family emigrated to Canterbury, New Zealand aboard the Canterbury departing September 1863 and arriving 10 January 1864. The passenger log recorded James as 5 years old. [2]
On 30 December 1880 at St Cuthbert's Church in Governors Bay, he married Mary Sadler, eldest daughter of William Sadler of Christchurch. [3]

Possible baptism: 29 April 1858 at Rothiemay, Banffshire. [4]
In ancestry trees they cite a 1938 death at Wellington although no source to support this. There are many James Gray death registrations!
