Biography

Rebecca Gray was born 04 MAR 1803 in Guilford, North Carolina. She married Samuel Breckenridge Lippincott. She passed away at a young 28 years old on 3 Sep 1831.

Rebecca's sister Mary in a letter writes: “In the year 1831 my sister Rebecca died, she had married Samuel Lippencutt, he was a widower with three children, two girls and a boy, she had three infants’ dead. A few days before she died we were all sitting around her and she said to me; "How little we know what is before us, you know how grieved I was about them children, now they are my joy I am going to them, but that little one on the floor," pointing to Rachel, that was the name she called her, she was old enough to sit on the floor. She is my trouble to be left in a cold hearted world without a mother, but I leave her with her father, he loves her better than anybody else, but is she to live and you live until she gets big enough to learn to sew I want you to take her and learn her to sew." He got me to keep her, and my father died the same month she died. Lippencutt had married and was going to move to Lima and he came and said he wanted Rachel, it went hard with me to part with her. Lippencutt came back and bought the farm where Lippencutt's Station is now and he brought Rachel with him. I remembered what her mother said if we both lived until she got big enough to work that I was to learn her to sew, this I did.”
