John Green was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to New South Wales

Biography

John Green was born in Newport on the Isle of Wight in 1767[1]. He was a convict who came to Australia sentenced for 14 years in September 1819 having been convicted at MIddlesex Gaol Delivery. The ship he travelled on was the John Barry.

Green was a sawyer, and was resident at the Piercefield Estate, Hunter Valley, in 1828 assigned to Mr William Carter. He was a Protestant.

In May 1848 Green was admitted to the gaol in Parramatta for trial. He was convicted of larceny in July 1848 and sentenced in July 1848 to short period of incarceration in the gaol[2].

In 1850 at the age of 83 he was admitted again to the North Parramatta Gaol. Green was described then as being 5 feet 5 inches tall, of a stout figure and ruddy complexion and a bald head. He had also achieved his ticket of leave. The jail records do not give the reason for his admission to the gaol although it is possible that the John Green convicted of stealing a waistcoat and sentenced to three months imprisonment was him[3]. Green was possibly admitted to the gaol in Parramatta as early as 1844 - in other gaol records he is described as having grey hair[1].
