Biography

Mrs. Annette Pope Celebrates 90th Birthday Last Saturday afternoon Mrs. A. R. Broadbent welcomed about 60 guests to the Tod Street Methodist Parsonage where gay bowls of flowers, arranged in the entrance hall and lounge, made a festive setting for a very special occasion. The little lady in whose honour the party had been organised was Mrs. Annette Pope, that day celebrating her 90th birthday. Bearing her fourscore and ten years lightly, fairly active and very bright, Mrs. Pope apparently enjoyed being 'Queen for a Day,' smilingly acknowledging the greetings of her relatives and friends. One who came to pay her homage was Mrs. W. J. May, who will shortly celebrate her own 90th birthday. A recitation was given by Miss Ann Cawrse, and Mrs. Davis' song 'Little Old Lady' was a happy choice. After tea and chatter, greetings and telegrams of congratulations were read by Mrs. Broadbent. Mrs. Ey, who has known Mrs. Pope all her (Mrs. Ey's) life, made a presentation to Mrs. Pope on behalf of those present. The birthday cake was a present from Mrs. Pope's niece, Mrs. Brown, of Minlaton. The nine candles, each representing a decade, were lit and fanned out, and the cake very expertly cut by Mrs. Pope to the accompaniment of 'She's a jolly good fellow,' and 'Why was she born so beautiful?' Mrs. Pope was not too overwhelmed by the 'party feeling' to attend church next morning, where further congratulatory greetings were extended to her. ^[1]

GRAND old lady of-Gawler is 90-year old Mrs. Annette Pope. Since the death of her husband some years ago Mrs. Pope has lived alone in her house in High street. She is very active, and has for years driven a model T Ford. She did not renew her registration this year and has since sold her car. Her hobby is collecting newspapers, and she has kept almost every newspaper since she was a girl. Mrs. Pope is a vegetarian-she has never tasted meat--and is a keen worker for the WCTU. ^[2]

Mrs. Pope in Hospital. Ninety-year-old Mrs. Annette Pope, of High Street, Gawler, as a patient at Hutchinson hospital is progressing as well as can be expected of one her age. About a fortnight ago she was blown off her feet by a strong wind, and fractured her left hip. She is allowed to see visitors. ^[3]
