Biography

Mary Greenup was born about 1821 in Kentucky, USA to William Greenup and his unknown first wife. Mary was the oldest daughter of 9 children born to William and his first wife.[1]

Mary Greenup married Joseph Fanning on May 16, 1838 in Morgan County, Illinois. [2]

"The Greenup Family", compiled by Elise Greenup Jourdan, also states that Joseph Davis Fanning married Mary Greenup on May 16, 1838 in Morgan County, Illinois. The book lists the following children born to the couple before Joseph died.

George William Fanning, b. May 16, 1840 in Illinois (Married Sarah Jane Dikus)
Delila Jane Fanning, b. July 19, 1943, IL (Married Henry Linney)
Samuel Moses Fanning, b. Feb.9, 1846, IL. (Married Matilda F. Dadisman)

According to the book, after the death of Joseph Fanning, Mary was thought to have returned to Illinois with her small children.[3]

Mary Fanning's husband Joseph Fanning apparently died while in some sort of military capacity. Mary began receiving a Widow's pension on October 31, 1846. Joseph was characterized as a "Musician".[4]

Mary ("Polly") Fanning can be found at the age of 28 on the 1850 US census with two children, Delila ("Delela") and Samuel Fanning.

According to "The Greenup Family", Mary Fanning had an older son, George William Fanning, born about 1840. George was missing from Mary's household on the 1850 US census. Another nearby Fanning family on the census may provide a clue to his whereabouts. A household headed by 27-year-old Joseph Fanning on image 205 of the same census shows his wife and their four children, ages 8 through 1, in descending order, followed last, out of chronological sequence, a 10-year-old George Fanning. The fact that he is listed last, and out of sequence with the other children may indicate that he is not a child belonging to this family. Since the age of this George fits George William Fanning, this may be him in a relative's household. It is currently unknown how this Joseph Fanning may be connected to Mary's somewhat older (deceased) husband, who was also named Joseph.[3]

Mary Mitchell can be found at the age of 39 on the 1860 US census for Greene County, Illinois with her second husband, Thomas ("Jefferson") Mitchell, and four children.
