Biography

John was born in County Galloway,Ireland on June 15, 1826 and died in Des Moines, Iowa on September 2, 1918 at the age of 92. (The obit lists his birthplace as County Galloway,Ireland, but it's more likely County Galway as Galloway is in Scotland)

He immigrated to the US in 1857

Military records list a John G. Griffen from Illinois as a Union soldier in the 30th regiment of the Illinois infantry. His rank was listed as private. I believe this to be the same man as our relative and he would've been in his mid to late 30's during the Civil War.

He married Miss Mary Timmons on June 11, 1865 at Oswego, New York.

They had seven sons and three daughters, and the following are listed as surviving at the time his obituary was written: John Griffin, Asher, Iowa, Thomas Griffin, Gowrie, Iowa, Daniel Griffin, Paton, Iowa, William Griffin, Fort Dodge, Iowa, James Griffin, Gowrie, Iowa, Steven Griffin, Norfolk, Virginia, P.H. Griffin, Shelton, Nebraska (this would be Peter), Mrs John Barrett, Des Moines (this would be Hannah Griffin), Mrs P.J. Conroy, Paton, Iowa (this would be Mary Jane), Miss Anna Griffin, Des Moines, Iowa.

He came to Greene County, Iowa in 1877, where he engaged in farming for 40 years, until June 1918 when he moved to Des Moines to his daughter's home at 1318 Penn Ave, where he died from "complications of diseases and old age".

His funeral was held at the Catholic Church in Grand Junction, Iowa and he was buried at Mt. Cavalry Cemetary in Grand Junction, Iowa on September 3, 1918.

1870 Census records have him in Amboy, Illinois and it appears his first four children, Hannah, John, Thomas and Daniel are born while they lived in Illinois. By the time of the 1880 Census he was in Iowa.

1880 Census records show him living in Dawson, Greene County, Iowa with his wife Mary. Census records also indicate both of his parents were born in Ireland.
