Biography

Hubert (Grimes) Smith was born in Blakeney, Norfolk, England.

BAPTISM - Hubert Alfred Grimes was baptised on the 13th October 1839, in the parish of St. Nicholas, Blakeney, Norfolk; the son of John Grimes (a gardener) and Rebecca Walker. ^[1]

MARRIED in 1862 - On the 23rd, at Forncett St. Peter, Hubert Alfred, only son of Mr. J. Grimes, of Aslacton, formerly of Blakeney, to Julia, second surviving daughter of Mr. William Brewster, of Carlton Colville-hall, Suffolk. ^{[2] [3] [4]}

Hubert Alfred Grimes was recorded as a farmer in Forncett at the time of his son William's birth in 1862, and as a publican in Aslacton at the time of his son Harry's birth in 1866. His wife Julia died in Aslacton, in 1866.

Herbert Alfred Grimes and Rosa Womack were married 4th December in the parish of Lopham St. Nicholas, Norfolk, England. ^[5]

Hubert Alfred Grimes listed as the licensee of the Bell Public House in Aslacton, Depwade Hundred, Norfolk in 1868-1869. ^[6]

In 1874 & 1875 he is recorded as the occupier of a house and land at Forncett St. Peter, at Forncett End. ^[7]

In 1878 & 1879 they have moved to Pulham St. Mary Magdalene. ^[8]

In 1880, Hubert Alfred Grimes is in Tivetshall St. Margaret, the £50 Occupier of a house 'near the Star Green.' ^[9]

Hubert's death is recorded as Hubert J. Smith, 17th September 1904 aged 65 years. His death record includes the information that he was married, a farmer, born in England, and that the was a Methodist. The informant is recorded as H.M. Smith, which would have been his son, Hubert Marshall (Grimes/Smith). ^[10]
