Biography

Zaccheus was born Dec. 10, 1705 in Windsor, Conn. He was the son of Benjamin Griswold and Elizabeth Cooke. He married, in Windsor, Nov. 15, 1728, Mary Griswold, b. 1707, daughter of Francis and Abigail (Colton) Griswold, who died Jan. 10, 1806. He wrote is last will and testament on 31 Jul 1789.

Zaccheus was a farmer, a quiet man, who did not mingle much in the politics of the time, content to attend to his farm. Removed to Goshen, Conn. Bought land from Matthew and Noah Griswold.

His Will In the name of God, Amen, I, Zaccheus Griswold of Goshen, in Litchfield county, and state of Connecticut, being advanced in age but of sound mind and memory, blessed be God therefor, and calling to mind my own mortality and that it is appointed unto * * * to dye, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, viz.: principally I commend my soul to God who gave it and my body I commit to the grave to be buried with Christian Burial at the * * * and desire of my Executor hereafter named and as to the good things of this life with which it hath pleased God to Bless me, after my just Debts and funeral The Griswold Family Charges are first paid, I do hereby dispose and Bequeath them as follows:# I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Mary the use and improvement of the North half of my dwelling house in which I now live and also the one half of my dwelling house where my son Zaccheus now lives, and the improvement of thirty acres of land that lyes next to each of sd two houses during her natural life, and I do hereby give and bequeath to my sd wife the use and * * * of all my household goods during her natural life. I give and bequeath unto my two sons Zaccheus & Giles, all my real estate that I shall dye seized of to be equally divided between them both. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Hannah, the wife of David Thompson, of Goshen, Forty pounds lawful money to be paid to her out of my personal estate by my executor provided there shall be sufficient therefor, to be paid out of my personal estate at inventory price, and provided my personal estate shall not be sufficient for that purpose, that then, my sd executor pay the remainder out of my lands or in Cattell at inventory price and I do hereby nominate and appoint my two sons, Zaccheus & Giles to be the joint executors of this my last will and testament by me made, uttered, published, & pronounced, hereby ratifying this and this only to be my last will and testament, in confirmation whereof, I have hereunto sett my hand and seal this 31st day of July 1789. Signed, sealed, published, pronounced & declared by the above testator to be his last will and testament.
