Ira was born in 1842 to Edson Griswold and Mary. Ira enlisted in Company H of the 103rd OVI on 8 Aug 1862 as a Corporal. On 1 Sep 1864 Ira was promoted to Sergeant. He mustered out with the company on 12 Jun 1865. Ira married Lucy M. Hall on 31 Mar 1869 in Portage, Ohio. In the late 1870s, Ira is living in Detroit, Michigan and is serving in the Michigan Legislature. He introduced the "Australian Ballot" bill, a form of secret ballot, to the Michigan Legislature. By 1880 Ira is living in Center, Atchison, Kansas as a Farmer. In 1888 Ira purchases land in Plum Creek, which became Lexington, Nebraska and continued farming until he passed away in 1918.
