Biography

Jane Ann Grove was born on 5 Nov 1835 in Lower Chanceford, York Co, PA.^[1] She was the only child of Jacob Grove (1813-1881) and his first wife Anna (Workman) Grove (1815-1841). After Anna's death in 1841, Jacob married Martha Tosh (1823-1891) in c1842.

1850 US Census:^[2] Jane A Grove was listed as 15yo and born in PA. She was living in Lower Chanceford, York Co, PA with Jacob Grove (37; PA) and his extended family. The household included:

1860 US Census:^[3] Joseph was listed as 43yo and born in PA. He was living in Lower Chanceford, York Co, PA with his wife Jane (24; PA) and their children Martha G (3; PA) and Agnes (1 mo old). The household included Sarah J Bollier (15; PA - perhaps servant or relative) and Thomas Manifold (19; PA - relative).

1870 US Census:^[4] Joseph was listed as 53 and born in PA. He was living in Lower Chanceford Twp, York Co, PA with his wife Jane (34; PA) and their children Martha (13; PA), Rebecca (10; PA), James W (7; PA - William James), Agnes (4; PA), and "E N" (1; PA). We speculate that this Agnes was named in memory of her deceased older sister, Agnes.

Jane's husband, Joseph, died in 1871. She never remarried.

1880 US Census:^[5] Jane A. Reed was listed as a 44yo widow, born in PA. Her parents were both described as born in PA as well. She was living in Lower Chanceford Twp, York Co, PA with her children Mattie G (23; PA), Willie J (16; PA), and Nettie A (14; PA).

1900 US Census:^[6] Jane A Reed was listed as a 65yo widow, born in Nov 1835 in PA. She was living in Chanceford Twp, York Co, PA with her son William J Reed (37; PA), his wife and three children, a servant, and Andrew Wallace (31; PA - likely a cousin).

1910 US Census:^[7] Jane A Reed was listed as a 75yo widow born in PA. She was living in Lower Chanceford Twp, York Co, PA with her son William, his wife, and their six children.

Jane passed away on 13 Nov 1912 in York Co, PA. She is buried in Chanceford Presbyterian Cemetery in Airville, York Co, PA.^[1]
