Nathaniel was the son of Elmer and Mary Gilbert, he sailed on a southern vessel, visiting the ocean isles and South America. He intended to return to the sea but instead met Phoebe Groo and they were married on Christmas Day 1806. They moved to Windsor, NY in 1810 and cleared land for a farm. He organized the first Baptist church in Syracuse in 1814 and was ordained pastor there that September 29th. In 1818 he returned to Norwich to become pastor to the church there.
