Richard Grubbs is a part of US Black heritage.
Richard Grubbs served in the United States Civil War.
Side: USA
Regiment(s): 117th Regiment, U.S.C.I.

Richard was born into slavery about 1834 in Kentucky. According to Freedman Bank records his slave owner was Jesse Yates. According to Grubbs family history, Richard was able to learn to read and write a little bit from his owner's children and always emphasized education in his own family. Jesse married Mary Ann Thomas around 1856.

During the Civil War Richard was able somehow to leave his enslavement and join the 117th Regiment , U.S. Colored Infantry. From Grubbs family history, Jesse and Mary Ann "went North" after the war in order for their children to get an education. In 1875 Jesse and Mary Ann were living with five children in Kansas and according to the census had come to Kansas from Ohio. From there they moved around 1879 to the area around Paducah, Kentucky where they purchased a 100 acre farm. In the 1880 census they were in Paducah with the five children. They raised many types of produce which they took to the market every day in Paducah to sell. By 1900 only the youngest son John was still living with them on the farm. From family accounts faith was extremely important to Richard and his family, and Richard was an elder at the Trimble Street Christian Church.

Richard passed away in 1910 and was buried in Oak Grove Cemetery in Paducah. His wife Mary Ann passed away a year later. They had been married over 50 years.
