Sarah Grubbs, daughter of William Grubbs and Suss was born about 1761 in Albemarle Virginia. She passed away in 1852.
She married James Berry on March 28, 1783, a year after his injury at the Battle of Little Mountain in Madison, Kentucky. [1] [2] On March 21 1782, James Berry was badly wounded in the thigh by Wyandot Indians in the Battle of Little Mountain, also known as Estill's Defeat, in which his captain, James Estill, was killed. Mr. Berry was carried off the battlefield on the back of Estill’s slave Monk Estill almost 25 miles (40 km) back to Estill Station. As a result of Monk's heroism, Wallace Estill, the brother of James Estill freed him. Monk was the first slave freed in Kentucky.
