Biography

Coutts Couple Celebrate 60 Years: Mr & Mrs Bertram Guess celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with members of their family and a large gathering of friends who met in Coutts Civic Centre. Mr & Mrs Guess were married in Kingston, Ontario, June 17,1907. They came west to Lethbridge in 1910 where Mr. Guest worked in the Lethbridge Sash & Door factory. Later they took up a homestead east of Coutts. Mr. Guest also worked at the refineries during the time they were in operation at Coutts. He built their present home where they have been living since their retirement. Bert & Annie, as they are known by all the community, are 80 and 82 years young. Both are in fair health andare able to do own house and yard work. Family present for the occassion were their daughter Mrs. Una Elliott of Rossville New Mexico, and their son and daughter-in-law Mr. & Mrs. Garnett Guess and grandson, Ian. The couple have three grandchildren and two great granchildren. [1]

GUESS – Passed away in Fort Macleod on Wednesday June 5, 1974, following a brief illness. Mr. Bertram Miller Guess, at the age of 88 years, formerly of Coutts, beloved husband of the late Mrs. Annie Gertrud Guess. Born in Ontario, the late Mr. Guess came to southern Alberta in 1912, settling in the Coutts district, where he farmed and was a cabinetmaker by trade. He retired at the age of 55 years. He was a life member of the Milk River Masonic Lodge. He is survived by one son, Mr. Garnet Guess, of Fort Saskatchewan; one daughter, Mrs. Una Elliot of Amarillo, Texas. The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, June 10, 1974 in St. Paul’s United Church, Milk River, with Rev. Charles E. Vickerson officiating. Interment will follow in the Family Plot, Milk River Cemetery. Martin Bros. Ltd., Directors of Funeral Service. (C9271)
