Biography

Today is GG’s birthday. She was born in Lexington, KY on August 23, 1924 to Milus Liddell and Dorcas Ussery Gunn. Her brother, William Ussery Gunn was born in 1919. GG was named for her mother’s half-sister, Martha Clark (Waller). GG was raised in Harlan, KY. She was homecoming queen her senior year in high school. She married her high school sweetheart, Henry Bryant Morgan, in 1943. Bryant and Martha were divorced in the late 1950s. In a bold and courageous move, Martha moved her three children to Ft. Lauderdale, FL in 1961, to get away from Harlan and the effects of her divorce. She had never had a full time job until she moved to Florida where She took a job at Jordan Marsh, a department store chain. She eventually became manager of the toy department, which she thoroughly enjoyed. In 1967 she moved to Middlesboro, KY and opened the Tack Room in partnership with Sonny Gergely and Cawood Ledford. The Tack Room was a woman’s clothing store. It remained open until the mid-1990s when it succumbed to the impact of the big box stores that opened on the main highway. As you know she lived out her remaining years on the Hatfield property in New Tazewell, TN. As Isaac said today, Happy Birthday in heaven GG! ^[1]
