Israel Gunn was born on May 10, 1742, in Sunderland, Hampshire County, in the Massachusetts Bay Colony of the British Empire. [1] Israel was the son of John Gunn and Hannah Root.
Sergeant Israel Gunn served with Hampshire County, Massachusetts Militia during the American Revolution.
In 1777, from February 25 to April 10, Israel served as a Private in Capt. Joseph Slarrow's company, Col. David Leonard's regiment. During his service, he was part of an expedition to Ticonderoga. Israel re-joined the militia from September 23 to October 18 as a Sergeant in Capt. Asahel Gunn's company, Col. David Wells's regiment. For this second enlistment, Israel took part in an expedition to the "Northern department."[2]
On April 13, 1797, Israel sold a tract of 27 acres to his son, Joseph, also in Montague, for 200 Massachusetts pounds.
Israel lived in Montague, Franklin County, Massachusetts, until his death on December 18, 1824. He was buried in the town's Old South Cemetery.[3]
